Kupwara encounter: Army jawan killed, 3 injured, operation underway

On September 21, The Indian Express had reported that Owaid alias Osama was the third member of Lakhvi's family to join the LeT's ranks and be part of its operations in Kashmir.

Army's Srinagar based Chinar Corp, however, confirmed the killing of only two militants.

According to police records, 194 militants have been killed this year, the highest figure in the past decade.

The security forces had before launching the operation "All-Out" "shortlisted" 258 militants from a clutch of outfits including LeT, Jaish-e-Muhammad, Hizb-ul-Mujahedin and Al-Badr Mujahedin.

Later in the afternoon, another encounter broke out between militants and security forces at Zirhama in the Trehgam area of the district. It was a joint operation of CRPF Police and Army. He figures in the National Investigating Agency (NIA)'s most wanted list.

Security forces launched a search operation at Magamin Handwara area of Kupwara District in north Kashmir following information about presence of militants there, a police officer said. One Garud commando of the Indian Air Force was also killed and a civilian injured during the encounter.

DGP SP Vaid tweeted saying,"Three LeT terrorists all Pakistanis neutralized in Magam area of Handwara district in North Kashmir".

The gun battle was ongoing till the filing of this report.
