Lyft to serve Toronto next month in first foray outside US

The ride-hailing war between Uber and Lyft is moving worldwide for the first time, with Lyft soon offering rides in Toronto, its expansion outside the US.

Lyft service will be available in Toronto by the holidays.

Lyft is in 300-odd cities across the U.S. but has so far shied away from taking on its biggest rival elsewhere, and other upstarts outside its home market.

"We've heard from many Torontonians that they wanted to have Lyft as an option in their city and we're excited to be a part of this community".

Previously, Lyft operated internationally through partnerships with local ride-sharing companies, like Grab in Southeast Asia and Didi in China.

"There is some pretty high, positive sentiment with Lyft", he added. Potential drivers must also pass DMV and background checks, both of which are free and conducted online.

Uber arrived in Canada several years ago and has fought an uphill regulatory battle ever since, leaving it banned or pushed out of some Canadian cities as the taxi cab industry dug in its heels against new competition from unlicensed platforms. For example, Quebec wants drivers to complete 35 hours of training, which Uber said was not feasible for many of its drivers who have other jobs and only drive for the service part-time.

Riders in the cities will be able to hail Lyft Plus, Lyft Premiere, Lyft Lux and Lyft Lux SUV rides, as well as normal Lyft's with cars that can take up to four passengers.

Lyft will serve the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and plans to launch by the end of the year.
