N. Korea replaces border guards following defection

Brian Hook, director of policy planning and senior policy adviser at the State Department, cited the North Korean soldier who dashed across the heavily fortified border into South Korea and was later found with multiple gunshot wounds, along with hepatitis B, pneumonia and large parasitic worms in his intestines.

After the defector's vehicle got stuck in a gutter close to the border, he jumped out and ran toward the South Korean side, CNN reported.

After investigating the incident, the U.N. Command said Wednesday it concluded that North Korea violated the armistice agreement ending the 1950-53 Korean War because its soldiers fired across and physically crossed the border in pursuit of the defector. Oh made his dash over the border at Panmunjom on November 13.

It was a rare defection through the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone that bisects the two Koreas, where South and North Korean forces stand face-to-face. "Was at JSA today, the North Koreans have planted two trees and are digging a trench at the spot where their soldier crossed the MDL (military demarcation line)", Knapper tweeted.

A senior US diplomat urged all nations to work together to denuclearize North Korea, saying the recent defection of a North Korean soldier illustrates the cruelty of that regime. It was not clear if the spot photographed was exactly the same as the location of the defection, although it appeared to be similar.

The source also told Yonhap the North seems to have temporarily closed a bridge over which the defector drove a military jeep to reach the border before his dramatic escape on foot last Monday. Analysts said the closing down of the so-called 72-Hour Bridge is likely temporary, as it is the only bridge that connects the North to Panmunjom.
