Twitter doubles character limit to 280 for (nearly) everyone

Twitter doubles character limit to 280 for (nearly) everyone

As it notes about the initial launch of the 280 character limit testing, Twitter says there will be another spike of users tweeting longer tweets initially, but that it will level off quickly.

In previous years, reports surfaced that Twitter was exploring increasing the character limit for tweets - reports Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey quashed by calling the 140-character limit "a lovely constraint".

Like many Twitter changes, some users complained about the move.

User posting in languages including Japanese, Korean and Chinese, which do not face the issue of "cramming", will continue to have a limit of 140 characters, Twitter said. Others just want an edit button already.

Twitter claims that the changes are a good thing (because of course they're a good thing), because "only" 5% of tweets with the 280 character limit exceeded 140 characters and only 2% were over 190 characters.

Now with more advanced devices, there's no technical limit on the size of tweets. Long-form tweeting is now the standard for everyone, and the changes are in the process of rolling out to all users.

"This reflects the challenge of fitting a thought into a tweet, often resulting in lots of time spent editing and even at times abandoning tweets before sending".

'Many people live in foreign countries or travel regularly, ' explained Twitter product designer Josh Wilburne in a blog post.

The announcement comes just a few months after Twitter started testing a 280-character limit for a set number of users around the globe, courting concern from users who were anxious that banishing brevity would clog up their timelines. SMS has largely become obsolete to Twitter users as smartphone technology has advanced.

Only five percent of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only two percent were over 190 characters.

The company didn't disclose how many users have been testing the longer tweets.

The company announced it was testing the new limit back in September "in languages impacted by cramming", which is almost all of them, save for Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
