A Texas Lawmaker Introduced Articles Of Impeachment Against Trump

After his resolution was read, Republicans held a vote to table it.

Green said he plans to go to the House floor around noon to start action on his impeachment measure.

A longshot bid to impeach President Trump failed on Wednesday. The vast majority of Democrats joined with Republicans in voting to table it.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected an impeachment resolution brought to the floor by Rep. Al Green (D-TX).

They say legitimate questions have been raised about Trump's fitness to lead the nation, but say congressional investigations and a special counsel investigation should be allowed to continue. "For this reason I will bring articles of impeachment to a vote in the House of Representatives", Green wrote in a letter to colleagues.

The longshot effort is expected to lose and is opposed by Democratic leaders who consider the effort premature. Instead, he argues that Trump has "brought disrepute, contempt, ridicule and disgrace on the presidency" and "sown discord among the people of the United States".

The impeachment resolution Green circulated Tuesday does not include any allegations of obstruction of justice or other alleged crimes connected to his 2016 presidential campaign or the pending investigations into connections to Russian Federation.

The White House quickly dismissed the impeachment effort, labeling Green and his allies "extremists".

Green's impeachment articles cite incidents including Trump's defense of protesters after a rally of white supremacists at this year's riot in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Last month, a group of six Democrats, including Green, unveiled articles of impeachment accusing Trump of obstructing justice when firing former FBI Director James Comey; violating the Constitution's emoluments clause; and undermining the independence of the federal judiciary and freedom of the press.

"I love my country", Representative Al Green of Texas said in a memo to colleagues Tuesday, before adding he meant to bring articles of impeachment against a president who was "unmindful of the high duties of his high office and the dignity and properties thereof".

Green's resolution is expected to fail, given widespread opposition among Republicans and most Democrats.
