Apple reveals the most popular apps, movies and music of 2017

While Google recently revealed its "top apps of 2017" section, Apple too has now announced its "Best of 2017" apps and games. Photo-editing app Affinity Photo was Apple's top iPad app of the year and puzzler The Witness was the No. 1 iPad game.

This year, people have been really digging Drake's More Life album, NPR's Fresh Air podcast, and the movie Moana, according to new data from Apple.

App Store editors identify four breakout trends in app culture for 2017: the introduction of AR (augmented reality) apps and games, the rise of real-time competitive gaming, apps focused on mental health and mindfulness and apps transforming storytelling and reading. While you're at it, we also have our lists of the best iPhone apps and the best iPhone games as well.

Super Mario Run tops the most downloaded games chart, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies and Subway Surfers. The Witness was also selected as Game of the Year on the Mac App Store, where Aurora HDR 2018 won in the app category.

While Snapchat was the most downloaded app of 2016, it slipped to the number two position this year, with Snap-owned Bitmoji taking top honors. But that wasn't all for the House of Mouse, with Disney claiming a full half of the top ten with five of its movies being listed, including Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Rogue One, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Despite only releasing November 10, Taylor Swift's new album Reputation has already shot up to third place, hinting TSwift's new album has even more success to come. Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory and Rick and Morty topped the iTunes TV charts this year.

But you're unlikely to guess the names of the 2017 iPhone and iPad App of the Year award recipients without cheating.
