Bryan Singer's sudden absence puts stop to Queen biopic

Actor Tom Hollander, who plays Queen manager Jim Beach, actually quit the movie because of Singer's behavior, but was eventually persuaded to return to the production.

A week after production shut down on "Bohemian Rhapsody", director Bryan Singer has officially been fired from the project.

The movie tracks the iconic rise of Freddie Mercury, one of the most beloved vocalists in recording history, as Queen rises to the zenith of the televised Live Aid event of 1985, which was the most watched concert in history.

Previously, Singer was also reported to have unexplained absences during the productions of "Superman Returns" and "X-Men: Apocalypse". Malek also reportedly filed complaints to Fox, citing Singer's disappearing acts as contributing to his unreliability and overall unprofessionalism.

The film has been shooting in London; on December 1 studio Twentieth Century Fox confirmed that due to the "unexpected unavailability" of Singer, the production had been put on hold.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" stars "Mr. Robot" actor Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury, the Queen frontman who wrote several hits for the band, including "Killer Queen" and "Bohemian Rhapsody". Cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel had to step in when Singer was a no-show. Things apparently reached a boiling point when Rami Malek and Singer got into a nonviolent confrontation that ended with the director throwing something. You can't just disappear when the tough gets going, and from the outside, it appears that's exactly what Singer did here - to a studio that stuck by the X-Men filmmaker through some hard times and troubling speculation, no less. Bustle has reached out to reps for Singer for comment, but did not immediately hear back. While the director has made no public statement about his absence from the film or his firing, a source tell THR he claims to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder due to the on-set tension.

Bohemian Rhapsody is now scheduled to hit theaters in December 2018.
