Colin Kaepernick accepts Muhammad Ali Legacy Award from Beyonce

Colin Kaepernick may have been the man of the evening at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards Tuesday night, but Beyoncé stole the show, as she took to the stage to surprise the National Football League star with the magazine's Muhammad Ali Legacy honor.

According to Fader, the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award is given to "individuals whose dedication to the ideals of sportsmanship has spanned decades and whose career in athletics has directly or indirectly impacted the world".

In the accepting the "Muhammad Ali Legacy Award", for which he was bestowed for his "steadfastness in the fight for social justice" and "adherence to his beliefs no matter the cost", Kaepernick, 30, cited his love of people as a reason he made a decision to protest the national anthem.

Kaepernick said he accepted the award on "behalf of the people". He is now suing several team owners for alleged collusion, claiming they deliberately denied him another job in the league due to the controversy around him. Because if it were not for my love of the people, I would not have protested.

I say this as a person who receives credit for using my platform to protest systemic oppression, racialized injustice and and the dire consequences of anti-blackness in America.

After the first time he sat out during the national anthem, Kaepernick explained at a press conference: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of colour". He has spent the rest of the year focusing on social justice issues.

A-listers have rallied around Colin Kaepernick - including Beyoncé!

"Thank you, Colin Kaepernick", she said.
