Geraldo Rivera apologizes to Bette Midler after alleged groping 40 years ago

On Wednesday, Rivera tweeted in support of former Today anchor Matt Lauer after he was accused of sexual misconduct, calling news a "flirty" business (comments Rivera has since apologized for).

Fox News Channel reporter Rivera in a Friday tweet cites his "tawdry" book and what he calls "consensual events" it describes.

Midler made the accusations against Rivera public on Thursday, when she shared a 1991 video of an interview with Barbara Walters with fans on Twitter.

Around the same time as the Walters interview, Rivera recalled the incident very differently.

"Geraldo and his producer came to do an interview with me, in the '70s, the early '70s", Midler tells Walters.

"Reaction to my tweets today on #sexharassment makes clear I didn't sufficiently explain that this is a horrendous problem long hidden", Rivera tweeted in the evening, hours after expounding on the gray areas of sexual behavior.

In addition to the Midler sort-of-apology, Rivera also sort of apologized for his 1991 memoir, which The Daily Beast's Erin Gloria Ryan referred to as "a horndog's bible of workplace harassment". Midler herself then tweeted the video of the interview on Thursday, saying Rivera had never apologized to her. "I feel like this video was a gift from the universe to me", Midler wrote on Twitter. "Gerald may have apologized for his tweets supporting Matt Lauer, but he has yet to apologize for this".

The 71-year-old singer said Mr. Rivera and his then-producer pushed her into a bathroom, forced her to inhale the recreational drug alkyl nitrite and then "proceeded to grope" her.

In a few of Rivera's controversial tweets, the media personality suggested that the accusers were merely disgruntled exes and sought to put forth his own definition of sexual harassment.

Sad about @MLauer great guy, highly skilled & empathetic w guests & a real gentleman to my family & me. "Shouldn't be used to get even w bad bosses or hated ex's", he wrote. Rivera is a "roaming correspondent-at-large for Fox News" and has worked for the network since 2001. "We were troubled by his comments and are addressing them with him", it tweeted.
