Lionel Messi admits Newell's Old Boys doubts

Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi has admitted that he is wary of facing Nigeria in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup.

But City apparently knew they would need to move sooner rather than later if they wanted to bring in the 30-year-old.

Thankfully, any suggest interest won't be forthcoming again as Messi has now signed a new deal at Barcelona with his current having a huge buy-out clause.

However, the Argentine attacker has voiced his concern over the state of affairs in his country which may cast doubt over any potential return.

Messi himself has been out of the side in recent weeks after starting Barcelona's last two Champions League matches on the bench.

"But it is true that we have to improve if we want to be world champions. Right now there are better teams than us, like Brazil, Germany, France and Spain". The criticism went beyond normal and went beyond football. "People want results and, if they don't get results, they want new faces".

Argentina, who have not won a major worldwide trophy since lifting the Copa America in 1993, were last week drawn in Group D for next year's World Cup finals in Russian Federation, alongside Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland.

"Nigeria have very good players, fast players, you can't give them space". I've done all I can.

Having been drawn with Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia in Group D in next year's tournament, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor expressed worries about the threat posed by the Super Eagles to his country's chances of reaching the second round.
