Metropolitan Opera investigating James Levine misconduct allegations

Metropolitan Opera investigating James Levine misconduct allegations

According to the report, the alleged abuse began at an inn near the Ravinia Festival in IL, where Levine was music director for two decades.

New York's Metropolitan Opera says it has opened an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against the conductor James Levine.

He said he was reaching out to police in Lake Forest because some of his encounters with Levine took place there in the mid-1980s. The allegations come with the United States reeling from a firestorm of sexual misconduct claims that have ended a litany of powerful careers and rocked USA industries from Hollywood to news to politics.

The New York Post first reported details of the police report.

"This first came to the Met's attention when the IL police investigation was opened in October of 2016", Peter Gelb, general manager of the Met, said in a statement to the Times.

"At the time Jim said that the charges were completely false, and we didn't hear anything further from the police", the Met's general manager, Peter Gelb, told the Times. "We need to determine if these chargers are true and, if they are, take appropriation action". "We will now be conducting our own investigation with outside resources". The abuse intensified over time as Levine allegedly touched himself and the minor sexually "hundreds of times".

Levine, who has been beset by back problems and Parkinson's in recent years, returned to a hero's welcome at Ravinia in 2016 and again this past summer. According to the police report, Greg Sandow, who writes about classical music and was questioned by police, told a detective that two other men had contacted him with similar allegations of abuse by Levine. In this case, the man asked that his name not be published and declined to be interviewed on the record.

The accusations follow a series of sexual abuse and harassment claims made against high-profile figures in the entertainment industry.

Longtime music director James Levine will be departing the Metropolitan Opera for health reasons. He is scheduled to conduct revivals of Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" starting April 1 and Mozart's "Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio)" beginning April 22.
