Netflix Defends 'Creepy' Tweet About 'A Christmas Prince'

Aiming to seize on its success and highlight Netflix's data-gathering ability, the service tweeted on Sunday that 53 people had watched A Christmas Prince every day for 18 days, adding the kicker, "Who hurt you?"

While the tweet was clearly intended as a joke, it didn't sit well with some customers who found the message "creepy".

Netflix has come under fire for exploiting user data for laughs, after its US Twitter account sent out a mocking tweet at the expense of viewers of one of its original movies.

Netflix told Sky News: "The privacy of our members' viewing is important to us".

"This is incredible. Except for the "watching us like big brother" part", one Twitter user wrote in reply.

Netflix trolled those people on Twitter by asking, "Who hurt you?" How else could the company get super-specialized recommendations for you, such as romantic period dramas based on books?

Now, Netflix has responded to the criticism and confirmed that the figure refers to collated trends and not individual viewing habits. One user even compared the tweet to "bullying".

Even though Netflix hasn't officially responded to the allegations of invasion of privacy, a number of Twitter users have jumped to its defence, stating that its a no-brainer that Netflix knows how many times shows are being watched and who watches them. There are also some TV specials to watch (or re-watch if you've already seen), like Peewee's Playhouse Christmas Special, Good Luck Charlie's It's Christmas and Trailer Park Boys: Live at the North Pole. They know what movies they watch and when they stop watching them and what they watch after that.
