Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 aspect ratio display. They came with a caption that reads: "Is everyone ready for the all-new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus?".

The budget category is vital for Xiaomi's ambitions as it looks to scale up the global smartphone charts, and a lot of the burden rests on the Redmi 5 as we head into 2018. They will be available in four colour options - Black, Light Blue, Gold, and Rose Gold.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 comes with a price tag of 799 yuan ($120 / Rs. 7,795 approx.) for 2GB RAM variant and 899 yuan ($135 / Rs. 8,770 approx.) for 3GB RAM variant. It also comes in two variants, just like the base model.

It comes with 18:9 full-HD display which is impressive as these are cheap phones by a global standard. The design of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus is inspired by the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

The highlight of both smartphones is the bezel-less display with tall 18:9 aspect ratio. The Redmi 5 Plus will retail for CNY 999 (about Rs. 9,744) and CNY 1,299 (around Rs. 12,670) for 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variants, respectively in the country.

Ahead of the launch event, pretty everything from design to specifications of the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus were revealed. The previous measures 151.8×72.8×7.7mm and weigh 157 grams, while the last measures 158.5×75.45×8.05mm and weigh 180 grams. There are two variants of the phone: 2GB RAM + 16GB storage and 3GB RAM + 32GB storage. All the basic connectivity options such as 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, and microUSB are included. However, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, on the flip side, will come with Snapdragon 625 SoC on board.

To power all those components, the handset packs a 3,300mAh capacity battery, a slight step down from the Redmi 4's 4,100mAh battery.

In terms of camera, the 12 MP camera and a 5 MP camera on the front remains the same. Sensors on the phone include Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope. It's worth mentioning that an expandable MicroSD card slot is also present and can be expanded up to 128GB.

On the other hand, the bigger Redmi 5 Plus has a 5.99-inch display with a higher 2160 x 1080 resolution.
