Schools dive in to Computer Science Education Week

Students who are interested in coding can continue their education, as Harrisonburg High School offers two classes on it, as do some of the governors' schools in the area, including AP Computer Science. This year's Computer Science Education Week starts today and there are over 122,000 Hour of Code global events registered to happen throughout the week. Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook have donated more than $10 million each to Code.org since its inception. And yet, only 11 states have created K-12 computer science standards.

The event is part of Hour of Code, an initiative to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.

Large tech companies like Microsoft are also taking part in this week's activities and working with legislators to promote computer science instruction in schools.

Students around the world are practicing their computer skills. According to a recent report from the Brookings Institution, almost two-thirds of new jobs created since 2010 can be classified as needing a "high" or "medium" number of digital skills to complete the job.

Code.org also celebrated new pledges from states, school districts and organizations to expand access to computer science education. "I'm thrilled to announce the launch of CSforCA to make sure every California student has access to high-quality computer science education". This year's Computer Science Education Week started today and runs through December 10.

"Providing more opportunities for students to study computer science and computer programming, whether informally through extracurricular activities and clubs or through computer science courses in middle and high school, will help to encourage students to pursue computing careers and will better prepare them for our evolving workforce", Gov. Cooper said.
