Rosenberg, D-Amherst, on Monday said he is temporarily stepping down as Senate president as Democratic members of the Senate deliberated behind closed doors on next steps.

Lawmakers have to determine whether to appoint an acting or permanent senate president to replace Rosenberg.

Rosenberg, a Democrat, originally had said he would recuse himself only from any matters related to the investigation of the allegations against his husband, Bryon Hefner.

WBUR's Steve Brown joined All Things Considered from the State House to discuss.

Rosenberg said Monday that he will relinquish his responsibilities as Senate leader during the investigation.

. "I'm glad to see the Attorney General and the DA step up, I'm glad to see the Senate taking this seriously, and I hope over the course of time people do come forward and feel comfortable speaking their peace, and I also hope these investigations move forward quickly", Baker said.

Rosenberg and Hefner both expressed shock and surprise at the allegations.

"I don't have to tell you how turbulent and tragic and surprising and very sad the last four days have been for all of us", Chandler said.

The statement added: "We ask anyone with this information to contact either office, and we remind every survivor of sexual assault that they can count on us to provide a safe, respectful, victim-centered environment, no matter what the circumstances might be".

Senate leaders begin the process Monday of selecting an independent special investigator to look into sexual misconduct allegations.

. "Senators should insist on an investigation that's beyond reproach, and that won't be possible unless Rosenberg takes a leave from the presidency".

Rosenberg said Friday that Hefner would soon enter treatment for alcohol dependency. Baker supports the decision of Healey and Conley to open the possibility of a criminal investigation.

The top Democrat of the Massachusetts Senate stepped aside Monday after his husband was accused of sexual misconduct by several men.

The scenario that unfolded on Monday was without modern precedent in the Massachusetts Senate.
