Storm Caroline to bring snow and 80mph winds to the UK

The Met Office said Storm Caroline will pummell Scotland with 80mph winds from Thursday.

Weather warnings have been issued as parts of the United Kingdom are braced for winds of up to 90mph, causing potential danger to life, with the arrival of Storm Caroline.

Storm Caroline is expected to barrel into the United Kingdom overnight after strengthening in the Atlantic Ocean throughout Wednesday.

"This will develop a cold northerly flow and as a result will drag cold Arctic air in across Britain late Thursday overnight into Friday resulting in a sharp drop in temperatures".

Met Office urged that the conditions could disrupt travel.

Forecasting snow showers in the United Kingdom can be quite challenging as conditions are often borderline between rain and snow.

This will be followed by a day of "increasingly frequent" snow showers across Scotland which will affect most of the country, including parts of Tayside.

The Met Office said: "Any snow showers will be most frequent over northern and western parts, and perhaps the east coast, but at times may become more widespread".

"Gusts of 60-70mph are expected quite widely, with gusts to 80mph possible near north-facing mainland coasts and across the isles". Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

It will take effect from 4pm tomorrow, with snow expected on higher ground in the Midlands.

"Large waves are expected and beach material may be thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties".

"On Thursday, the strength of the wind during the morning peak period is likely to lead to bridge restrictions and closures and we would urge drivers to check ahead", said Transport Minister Humza Yousaf.

John Eagleton is a forecaster with Met Éireann.

Northern England is also expecting snow on Sunday evening.
