Trends Reveal More Pregnant Women Are Increasingly Smoking Marijuana In California

An analysis of urine samples from roughly 300,000 California women finds that more than 7 percent used marijuana while pregnant. In January 2017, after JAMA published another study showing an uptick in marijuana use among pregnant women, Nora D. Volkow, who heads up the National Institute on Drug Abuse, authored a counterpoint outlining the risks of smoking pot while pregnant.

"Nationally, studies have indicated that marijuana use is increasing over time, and that marijuana use is increasing over time among pregnant women, but the prevalence of marijuana use during pregnancy is higher in this study", Young-Wolff said.

Among women younger than 18, pot use increased from 12.5 percent to nearly 22 percent.

Lastly, the study detailed that the number of pregnant women between 25 and 34 who smoke weed has gone from 3.4 percent to 5.1 percent.

Only about 30% of women which were tested admitted to their use, while well over 50% tested positive. "However there are many things that pregnant women are advised to avoid".

According to Dr. Navizadeh, it is hard to determine the exact effects of marijuana use on babies and fetuses because, oftentimes, expectant mothers who are using marijuana may also be using other drugs. None of the research thus far is wholly conclusive -but as marijuana becomes legal (both medically and recreationally) in more states, research on the effects it could have on fetuses and newborns continues to increase.

The women who were asked to complete the study were in the early part of their pregnancy.

One of the most perplexing foundings that researchers from the The Kaiser Permanente school of medicine is the stat showing how many women admitted to cannabis use, when compared to the number of those that tested positive.

The significant increase in marijuana use among pregnant women may be explained not only by increasing social acceptance of pot, but also possibly by increasing removal of government restriction of the drug. "Definitely, more research is needed".

Research shows that marijuana use during pregnancy may be linked to future developmental and hyperactivity disorders in children.

Morning sickness is one of the first trimester of pregnancy's more irritating quirks, and though suffering expecting mothers can sniff as many lemons and eat as many protein-rich foods as they want, sometimes there's not much to do but wait for the nausea to pass.

Whatever the reasons, the findings could be bad news for babies, since "initial evidence suggests that prenatal marijuana may impair fetal growth and neurodevelopment", Young-Wolff's group said.
