Willie Taggart to be next Florida State football coach

Willie Taggart to be next Florida State football coach

Most recently, Taggart led OR to a 7-6 record during his lone season in Eugene.

For now, Taggart will be the team's coach when they head to Las Vegas to take on the 25th-ranked Mountain West champion Boise State Broncos. But he has pretty deep ties to the state of Florida, as a Bradenton native with family still living in Florida and four seasons as head coach at South Florida (2013-2016) on his resume.

While at Oregon, Taggart landed commitments from four-star prospects Warren Thompson and Isaiah Bolden despite each being high on FSU's target list.

It's official. Willie Taggart will be Florida State's next head coach.

The coaching search is over for Florida State. As it turns out, the wait for the next head coach didn't take all that long like officials promised. But FSU rebounded and won four of five down the stretch to continue the program's record bowl streak to 36 consecutive years. Handling pressure is an important trait for a major head coach and the expectation to win quickly in Tallahassee isn't going anywhere. Why hire someone who has a sub.500 career record at 47-50? He also spent three years at Western Kentucky before coaching the Bulls. He initially joined Taggart's staff in Eugene last January after previously serving as tight ends coach with Alabama. He proved this time and time again at Western Kentucky, USF, and finally Oregon.

It's impossible to foresee how Taggart will fare in a prestigious program like Florida State. Time for the Recruiting Class is of the essence. Yet for certain, athletic director Stan Wilcox did his due diligence to hire the best-possible candidate for the job.

Florida State finished this season 6-6 and will play Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl.
