4 powerlifting players killed in road accident in India

The lethal accident occurred at Sindhu border in Delhi.

Five national-level powerlifters, including Saksham Yadav, who had bagged a gold medal for India at the World Weightlifting Championships previous year, lost their lives while another was critically injured when their speeding vehicle lost control and rammed into a pole near Singhu on the Delhi-Haryana border Sunday morning.

Four powerlifting players from Delhi were killed when the auto they were in hit a road divider and crashed into a pole on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway today morning.

A Delhi Police official identified the other deceased as Tikamchand, 27, Yogesh, 24, Harish Roy, 20, and Saurabh, 18. Yadav 28, had won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship for India.

Another weightlifter, Rohit, 19, is battling for life.

Four powerlifting players were killed and two others injured seriously Sunday after a auto they were travelling in hit road divider and crashed into a roadside pole, police said. Saksham Yadav and Rohit were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh. "He has internal bleeding in the head", said a senior doctor at AIIMS. While Rohit, one of the victims who suffered grievous injuries was taken to LNJP Hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger.

The vehicle, according to the official, first hit a divider and then crashed into an electric pole. "So the possibility of drunken driving is there", he added.

Police said that they were driving towards Karnal in Haryana after the birthday celebrations of one of the occupants of the vehicle. Some liquor bottles were found in the vehicle.

The accident took place on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.
