Buhari appoints 3 dead people as Board members, Chairman[DETAILS]

Mr Okpozo, 81, was appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Press Council.

Reverend Christopher Utov, who died in March 2017, is on the board of Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research and Chief Donald Ugbaja, who died last month, on the board of the Consumer Protection Council. The retired deputy inspector general of police died on November 29, 2017, exactly a month before his appointment was announced. "But Okpozo, a Senator in the Second Republic, died on December 16, 2016".

The Nigerian presidency has ruled out sanctions against any of the officials working with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for the embarrassment caused the government and the nation by an appointment list containing names of deceased persons.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Saturday.

According to him, "no human undertaking can be free of mistakes", maintaining that "there is no scandal" involved in the appointments.

He explained that the list was compiled in 2015, but when the panel constituted to compile the list submitted its report early this year, President Muhammadu Buhari had health challenges and left the country on medical leave.

A source told Daily Trust on Sunday that the controversial list contains over 60 percent of the initial nominations by the Babachir Lawal-led committee despite protest of some governors and party bigwigs.

The statement read in part, "Withdrawing the appointments and directing and allowing the civil service systems to follow due process to reappoint chairpersons and members to the boards of these agencies and parastatals would bring the government's practices and operations into conformity with Nigeria's global anticorruption obligations, particularly the UN Convention against Corruption".

"The report was disputed by state governors who said they were not carried along or the list was not representative enough".

Shehu further explained that the president only made a decision to revisit the matter recently and therefore directed the new SGF to release the list.
