Chelsea Manning files to run for Senate in Maryland

Chelsea Manning files to run for Senate in Maryland

Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst who was convicted in 2013 of leaking a trove of classified documents, has filed paperwork to run for a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland.

Manning's filing was received January 11, according to Federal Election Commission records. She will run as a Democrat. Although Manning served a shorter sentence thanks to Obama's pardon, her time in prison was longer than time served by anyone else in the United States convicted of leaking classified information. She was sentenced to 35 years, but President Barack Obama commuted the sentence at the end of his term.

Reuters said Ms Manning did not immediately respond to requests for a comment. Her candidacy would undoubtedly bring attention, both in Maryland and around the nation, to transgender rights and the rise of the security state. In September, a profile of Manning in Vogue magazine ran alongside a picture of her in a swimsuit, taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.

President Trump has been critical of Manning, once referring to her as an "ungrateful traitor".

Manning has not discussed her Senate campaign on Twitter, but has recently weighed in on political issues there.

The transgender activist and whistleblower served seven years in prison before she was released in May 2017.

In addition to Manning, Cardin so far faces a Democratic primary challenge June 26 from political unknowns Richard "Rikki" Vaughn and Jerome Segal.

During her incarceration Manning battled for, and won, the right to start hormone treatment. She said she might release a statement in the coming days. The state's senior senator is an overwhelming favourite to win. Ben Cardin, D-Md., speaks during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on.
