Father of Slender Man attacker calls new movie 'extremely distasteful'

Slender Man, which started as a creepypasta internet meme nearly a decade ago, is now a feature length film. Weier and Morgan Geyser lured classmate Payton Leutner into a wooded area in 2014, before Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times as Weier urged her on. Surge is the creator of Slender Man, and he's co-written the script for the movie alongside David Birke.

Slender Man, the movie, is about the same faceless creature and the trailer of the film builds on its presence. It's popularising a tragedy is what it's doing. He went on to say that "it's extremely distasteful". The film is not a depiction of an actual incident that occurred in 2014, in which two young girls stabbed and attacked a classmate in order to appease the fictional character Slender Man. The studio released a trailer Wednesday with scenes depicting a girl stabbing herself and Slender Man stalking a girl in the woods.

Despite the movie's fictional basis, Bill Weier, the father of Anissa Weier - one of the girls who committed 2014's attack - is speaking out against the movie calling the release absurd, in an interview with the Associated Press. "All we're doing is extending the pain all three of these families have gone through". Leutner survived the attack.

Weier's daughter, now 16, was sentenced to 25 years in a mental institution last month.

Slender Man began as an online meme of sorts, spreading from Photoshopped images created by Eric Knudsen in 2009 into other forums and mediums. It follows on from last year's acclaimed HBO documentary, Beware The Slenderman, and tells the story of four high school girls as they attempt to debunk the myth of Slenderman.

The film, Slender Man, is directed by Sylvain White and stars Javier Botet as the title character.
