Goerges humbles Wozniacki to seal Auckland title

World number 3 Caroline Wozniacki advanced to her 51st WTA final with 2 solid wins on Saturday in Auckland, as they all had to play both the quarter-final and semi-final matches due to rain that spoiled the plans for the organizers in the last few days.

The Dane struggled in her earlier quarter-final against the 19-year-old American wildcard Sofia Kenin before winning the rain-affected match 4-6 6-2 6-4 just before 4pm.

Su-Wei Hsieh toppled the 3rd seed Barbora Strycova by 0-6 6-2 6-2, recovering after a bad start to reach the semis, followed by the second seed Julia Goerges who defeated Polona Hercog to make the last 4 as well.

She returned to centre court at the Auckland Tennis Centre about 5.50pm and then comfortably accounted for American qualifier Sachia Vickery, who had earlier upset third seed Agnieskza Radwanksa, in the 6-4 6-4 win.

The match then went with serve to a tiebreak in which Goerges captured three minibreaks to Wozniacki's two, serving out the match at her first attempt and improving her head-to-head record against Wozniacki to 6-4.

"I was just so bad in that match, I couldn't feel anything on court - no rhythm, no nothing", the 28-year-old Radwanska said. "I'm not 17 anymore, I can feel it for sure!"

Goerges however stamped her intentions on the opening point when she smashed a forehand service return back at Wozniacki's feet and broke to take a 1-0 lead that she never relinquished.

"It would be amazing.obviously, being here in another final means a lot to me, and I would love to make it a step further and win this tournament".

Last year, Serena Williams said she "abhorred" the conditions when bundled out in the second round on a particularly windy day and wanted to "get to somewhere better, some warm weather".

"I don't know if it's sometimes so nice to talk to yourself". She did that with a hold at 15 to book the place in the final where she will try to beat Wozniacki for the 6th time in their 10 matches.
