Ibuprofen can cause male infertility

Ibuprofen can cause male infertility

Scientists warn that ibuprofen could be wrecking men's fertility by making their balls shrivel up.

Danish and French researchers say the use of Ibuprofen can alter the testicular physiology of men and consequently lead to infertility. Tests showed their testosterone levels hadn't changed, although the testes weren't producing adequate levels.

Researchers told CNN that, while these effects were reversible, they were unsure of whether there were long-term health effects associated with the prolonged use of ibuprofen. Some took 1,200 milligrams of ibuprofen daily, which is the maximum limit as directed, over a six-week period.

The researchers found that, compared with the placebo group, the men who took ibuprofen experienced a 23 percent increase in levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) - a hormone that's secreted by the pituitary gland and stimulates the production of testosterone - after two weeks.

Compensated hypogonadism usually only affects the elderly or smokers, but taking ibuprofen increases a younger person's risk. After 44 days, levels were even higher.

All 3 drugs are considered anti-androgenic, meaning they disrupt male hormones.

. According to a recent study, however, regular consumption of the drug could lead to several side-effects, including male sterility.

'Therefore it is also of concern that men with compensated hypogonadism may eventually progress to overt primary hypogonadism, which is characterised by low circulating testosterone and prevalent symptoms including reduced libido, reduced muscle mass and strength, and depressed mood and fatigue'. Inhibition of testosterone levels was found to be significant and dose-dependent after 24 and 48 hours of ibuprofen exposure (in doses which corresponded to the oral doses used in the trial). The consistency of the results, however, as well as the earlier epidemiological results, suggest that there might really be an issue here.

Compensated hypogonadism is typically found in older men, and it is linked with impaired fertility, according to the study. This amount was used to represent the dose taken by athletes to manage pain.

"The study shows that ibuprofen use results in selective transcriptional repression of endocrine cells in the human testis", the significance on the PNAS site reads.
