Major League Baseball trade rumors: Astros acquire Gerrit Cole from Pirates

According to Jon Morosi, the trade is imminent and has been gaining momentum since yesterday. This trade increases Cole's upside in the wins department, but the move to the American League may offset those potential gains.

The report comes after weeks of speculation that Cole could be headed to the New York Yankees. Passan did note that "generally, this sort of thing winds up with a deal being consummated". This is not a one-year rental, and Houston landed a proven arm who is just 27 years old. He was 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA and 196 strikeouts in 203.0 inning pitched in 2017.

In the postseason, Cole has a 1-2 record in three games started.

However, the right-handed hurler has slipped some in recent years. He has a 3.50 ERA in 127 career starts.

From Pittsburgh's perspective, losing someone of Cole's caliber is hard to swallow, especially as a smaller-market team that doesn't always attract marquee free agents. There haven't been any indications as to the return the Pirates are looking for from Houston. It's less clear how badly the Pirates need outfield prospects given the presence of Austin Meadows, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco.
