Packers promote Gutekunst to GM

Schneider, 46, had two stints working with the Packers, getting his start in the team's personnel department in 1993 and working as a scout until 1996 and then working in two higher-level positions in Green Bay's personnel department from 2002 until coming to Seattle in January of 2010.

Instead the Packers were forced to focus on in-house candidates, which meant they were going to focus on Gutekunst, Russ Ball and Eliot Wolf.

Gutekunst has spent the past 19 years in the Green Bay organization, and was promoted to director of player personnel in 2016. The man replacing him will come from a similar mold, as the Packers made a decision to give in-house candidate Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager. The request for the Green Bay native was denied.

Two other names had been linked to replacing Thompson in Green Bay. Most notably is the Packers at least showing some interest in former scout/personnel man turned Seahawks general manager John Schneider. By hiring Gutekunst, Green Bay is likely sticking with McCarthy for another season.

It'll be interesting to see what Gutekunst will bring to the table.

During Thompson's time as general manager, the Packers reached the playoffs nine times in 13 seasons and won Super Bowl XLV. It didn't help that quarterback Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone midseason against the NFC North division rival Minnesota Vikings.
