Peace in region contingent upon peace in Afghanistan: DG ISPR

"The International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) could never have defeated Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan without Pakistan's support, the DG said when asked about US President Trump's recent tirade against Pakistan ".

The US is committed to not allowing either Pakistan or Afghanistan to become a safe haven for terrorists from where they can attack America and its allies, said the senior Trump administration official on condition of anonymity.

The ISPR chief said Pakistan fought war against terrorism under an integrated plan, and the army wouldn't let anyone sabotage the peace achieved as a result. Khurram Dastgir Khan, Pakistan's defense minister, this week confirmed the move and added that the country is considering more radical options such as preventing the USA forces from using Pakistan as a land route to Afghanistan.

"We are fully aware of U.S. concerns on activities of Afghan nationals in Pakistan and we are already undertaking multiple actions through Operation Raddul Fasaad to deny any residual capacity to terrorists of all hue and colour for which return of Afghan refugees is an essential prerequisite".

"Pakistan proposed to Afghanistan a bilateral border control mechanism". "Fencing on 2600-km-long border with Afghanistan has already begun and there will be a significant improvement in border management in future", he added. "[Retired army chief] Gen Kiani laid out a plan to eradicate terrorism", he said, emphasising that Gen Bajwa's mission was to transform the previous antiterrorism successes into long-term peace.

"Now Afghanistan has to take effective measures against terrorists taking refuge on its soil", he said.

"On the other hand, India is still active in perpetrating terrorism inside Pakistan".

The statements made by the army chief came after he received two phone calls over the week; one from the commander of US CENTCOM and the other from US Senator to discuss the security cooperation between the two nations post US President Donald Trump's tweet.

Since Trump took office, there have been several drone strikes in Pakistan's border region but they have not so far gone deeper into Pakistani territory, though Islamabad believes that is on a menu of punitive actions the US administration is considering.

The process had started with Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's meeting with US Vice-President Mike Pence on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
