Port Authority bombing suspect pleads not guilty 'at this moment'

Ullah, 27, who was also injured in the explosion, has been in federal custody since his arrest. He made his first court appearance from his hospital room via a video link and later was transferred to the federal jail in Manhattan.

Akayed Ullah was arrested after allegedly setting off a pipe bomb in a tunnel leading to Times Square on December 11, 2017.

A grand jury indicted Akayed Ullah, who was accused of trying to blow up a suicide bomb in New York City in December, on terrorism charges.

The Bangladeshi man accused of attempting a suicide bombing in a busy New York City commuter hub in the name of Islamic State in December was indicted on U.S. terrorism charges by a grand jury on Wednesday.

When asked by a judge if he had a plea, he responded saying not guilty.

Ullah, a Bangladeshi immigrant, was the most severely injured person from the attack in the bombing of a heavily-trafficked underground walkway connecting the Port Authority bus terminal with the subway.

Akayed immigrated to the United States on a family visa in 2011.

She said Ullah recently had some stitches removed but had others that were still causing him a "great deal of discomfort".

"At this moment, not guilty", Ullah said when U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan asked for his plea to a six-count indictment that was announced on Wednesday. And she said he needed some of the dressing on his wounds changed.

"We have an indictment containing charges like this, I think that it's easy to lose sight of the very important and invaluable rights that every person is afforded in our system of justice, including Mr. Ullah", Gallicchio said.

Ullah suffered lacerations and burns to his hand and stomach in the bombing, authorities said. The president later demanded tightened immigration rules. One component connected to the wires was a Christmas light bulb, something authorities say is often featured in instructions online for making a pipe bomb. The government said he later described himself as an adherent of the Islamic State group, and was angry about US policies in the Mideast.
