Ryan Defends, Clarifies Trump's Tweet Criticizing FISA Bill

"I thought about my own family", he said, describing his Irish immigrant relatives who came to the USA on what he said were called "coffin ships" and began working the railroads.

Trump reportedly said: "Why do we need more Haitians?"

He then said their story of overcoming that oppression was "a attractive story of America".

"I read those comments later last night, the first thing that came to my mind was very unfortunate, unhelpful", the Wisconsin Republican said at WisPolitics Luncheon in Milwaukee. "Thought about my own family", adds "my family came from Ireland and worked the railroads, the Irish were really looked down upon back in those days". He admits efforts toward such a compromise are complicated by reports President Donald Trump referred to Haiti and African countries as "expletive-holes" during a meeting the day before.

"I don't see us tackling it this year", he said at an event in Wisconsin.

Ryan also said that he is confident that there will not be a government shutdown next week, as lawmakers scramble to negotiate spending legislation to keep it operating. "I think we'll get a down payment on some of these problems and keep fighting, keep working to get the rest of it done".

Ryan said Congress will eventually have to address making changes to the social safety net, arguing the current structure is fiscally unsustainable.

Asked how Trump's comments will affect immigration talks, Ryan responded, "We have to get it done".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has previously said he does not think the GOP-majority Senate could pass a welfare reform bill on a partisan basis.
