Takata recalls additional 3.3 million air bags

The phased recalls began in May 2016 and stemmed from previous Takata airbag incidents, including 20 reported deaths and 180 injuries worldwide.

If sources are to be believed, Takata has identified at least 19 automotive industry players that have purchased the airbags, comprising Toyota, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Daimler Vans, Mazda, Ford, Mitsubishi, Honda, Jaguar-Land Rover, Fiat Chrysler, and General Motors.

Visit the NHTSA website to sign up for updates and check the list of makes, models and model years of affected vehicles.

The 3.3 million airbag inflators added Saturday brings the number of recalls up to a grand total of 69 million inflators in 42 million vehicles. The fix: Once it has been determined that a vehicle meets the requirement for these recalls, replacement airbags will be installed, NHTSA says. NHTSA is prioritizing the recalls, putting older models, those in "highest danger zones" in the first priority group.

These latest recalls are only part of the largest series of automotive recalls in USA history. Sources further disclose that, the scandal has forced Takata to file for bankruptcy in June 2017, owing to spiraling debts.

Takata uses the chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion and fill airbags quickly in a crash. Unfortunately, the chemical becomes unstable after years of exposure to humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Many automakers have been slow to replace the potentially deadly inflators. If that happens, the airbag can explode with greater force than intended, sending metal fragments into the vehicle's cabin, and could injure or kill the driver or front passenger.

As per NHTSA, the organization is attentively monitoring the company's progress and is also working on expanding good practices to boost the completion rates.

NHTSA and vehicle manufacturers are urging the public to get their vehicles fixed as soon as possible, saying the recall fix will be free.
