The residents say the authorities were slow to respond to the girl's disappearance, charges denied by police.

One viewer wrote: "Powerful and impassioned opening comments by Pakistani anchor Kiran Naz who got her daughter on the show to make a point about little Zainab's rape and murder". The situation at Kasur police station got quite tense after which police had to disperse the crowd, in which two civilians were killed.

She had gone to a religious tuition centre near her house in Kasur city, some 50km from Lahore, on January 5 from where a man said to be a "serial killer" abducted her, police said. The gang had allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted at least 280 children in the area, had blackmailed the families of the victims since 2009, and even sold video clips and images of the assault online.

Zainab's parents were away on a pilgrimage when the incident took place.

Zainab is the eighth child to have been raped and murdered in Kasur in the last 12 months, according to police. As reporters surrounded them outside Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport, her grieving mother said: "I have nothing to say, I just want justice for my daughter".

Zainab Ansari's body was found last week in a garbage bin.

Zainab's father claimed that police "did not cooperate" with them: "It is our friends who have stood by us", he regretted.

A source in the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) told Dawnthat the agency had received samples collected by Kasur police from the crime scene.

Regional Police Officer (RPO) Kasur Zulfikar Muhammad confirmed that the girl was strangled to death.

The Punjab chief minister also instigated the committee meetings to be held with daily attempts under clause for children’s support including scrutiny of the police’s procedures and awareness campaigns among parents and children.

"They have thrown stones on the buildings of the government hospital, police and deputy commissioner's office".
