Trump blames wrong president for 'bad' embassy property deal behind cancelled visit

Trump blames wrong president for 'bad' embassy property deal behind cancelled visit

President Donald Trump canceled a trip to the new USA embassy in London , claiming that it was because he's "not a fan" of the building.

Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs spokesperson Jo Swinson also criticized Trump for cancelling his plan to visit the United Kingdom, but directed part of her remark toward British Prime Minister Theresa May for not going one-upmanship on the president by announcing the decision first.

The working visit to open the new US embassy was expected to be made by the US President after plans for a full state visit were postponed.

Trump was expected to open the Embassy in February but sources suggest that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will instead attend the ceremony.

The new U.S. Embassy building is seen during a press preview near the River Thames in London.

Theresa May was the first world leader to meet Trump following his inauguration last January and was criticised for inviting him for a state visit - "an offer that was said to have caused concern at Buckingham Palace", according to The Times. "Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO", Trump wrote.

Only last week Theresa May said Trump "will be coming to this country".

A design competition will ensure the new facility reflects the best of modern design, incorporates the latest in energy-efficient building techniques, and celebrates the values of freedom and democracy.

While Trump put the blame on US President Barack Obama, the decision to move from Mayfair to Nine Elms was in fact taken by the administration of former Republican president George W. Bush in 2008.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May extended an invitation to the president when she became the first world leader to visit Trump's White House past year.

But the relationship between Trump and May has been far from rosy.

British members of Parliament had called on May to rescind the invitation to Trump over the video incident and earlier actions, including his attempt to temporarily block immigration from several Muslim-majority nations.

The BBC understands that No 10 is considering options for a state visit later in the year, with plans for Mr Trump to have lunch with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. "Many Londoners have made it clear that Donald Trump is not welcome here while he is pursuing such a divisive agenda".
