Turkey summons U.S. diplomat for supporting Syrian Kurd group

Ankara accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary, as well as having a large network of influence and intimidation overseas.

The People's Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, is seen by the USA as the most effective ground partner for the US-led coalition fighting ISIL in Syria.

But in a major potential obstacle for Sochi, Turkey says it will oppose any talks involving the Syrian Kurdish militia the Peoples' Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as a terror group.

During the September round of Astana talks, Russia, Iran and Turkey, the three states that serve as guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire, agreed on all four de-escalation zones in Syria - one in Idlib including parts of neighboring Hama province, the second one in the north of the central province of Homs, the third one in eastern Ghouta near Damascus and the third one in the country's southern province of Deraa.

However, Syrian regime forces, with Russian backing have stepped up attacks trying to regain control of the area controlled by the rebels.

Russia, Iran and Turkey are supposed to be the guarantors of last year's accord but Moscow and Tehran appear bent on reneging on their role to de-escalate fighting in the area, home to almost 2 million Syrians, to serve their own agenda.

Ankara has already summoned the Russian and Iranian ambassadors, in the biggest public flare-up of tensions with Moscow and Tehran in months.

Police arrested 29 people across Turkey on Wednesday for suspected links with the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group behind the defeated coup on July 15, 2016, according to a security official. Secondly, that is also an attempt to destroy our relations with partners, Turkey and Iran.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned on Wednesday the United States charge d'affaires to voice its disappointment over Washington's arming and training of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria, sources from the ministry said.
