All of us saw at the World Cup the incredible gifts that Kato had, and his potential to forge a great career in Rugby League. "Prayers with all his family", star playmaker Blake Austin posted to his Instagram account.

He had been due to travel to the United Kingdom this week to fulfil his dream of playing first-grade rugby league in Britain.

"He was a very respectful young man who appreciated everything we were doing for him here in adjusting to life in Canberra and learning his trade in becoming a professional football player".

"Kato was an incredibly talented player, with a bright future ahead of him in rugby league", Widnes chief executive James Rule said on the club's website.

The club said: "Kato's life will be celebrated at this game with a minute's silence, the first of a series of tributes that we are planning for our teammate".
