Will Ferrell Crashed The Aus Open To Grill Roger Federer, Burgundy-Style

Post-match interviews are commonplace on the big show courts at Melbourne Park - but nobody expected actor and comedian Will Ferrell to be the one posing the questions to the defending champion.

Six-time champion Novak Djokovic and 2014 Australian Open victor Stan Wawrinka earlier made successful returns from injury lay-offs with victories in their first matches since Wimbledon.

Federer has a record 19 grand slams, two of which he won previous year with his fifth victory at the Australian Open and eighth Wimbledon crown.

He broke Bedene's serve in the fourth game of the first set in which he conceded only three points on his serve.

“Im hoping for it to go well again, Im not sure it can go this well because a year ago was so good.

“I was thinking a lot about what happened at the tournament previous year because it was my favourite tournament of the whole season.

He said he had met Federer several times and would like to see more of him, "but obviously his time is pretty well taken care of". I can't control it all, it was a fairy tale. It could be my favourite year of my career.

Federer was not alone in making a strong start to the first Grand Slam of 2018, with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal already registering thumping first-round wins and the 19-time major victor admitted that the added competition will make life even harder for him this time around.

Novak Djokovic, a less controversial bracket buster than Sharapova, swept Donald Young 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

"I feel honoured, as well, especially coming from her, being the best player in the world right now". But Wawrinka was heartened by the first examination of his still painful knee at the years opening Grand Slam.

Even though the Serbian former World No.1 one has been out of action for six months he looked in good shape. It's just great to be back.

Rosewall doesn't mind if Federer breaks his record of being the oldest men's Grand Slam champion in the professional era.
