7 more flu deaths reported in NC bringing season's total to 305

Statewide and throughout the country, the 2017-18 flu season remains busy. This compares to a high of 12 percent of patients who were seen for flu-like illness during the week ending February 10. Five pediatric deaths from flu are confirmed for the season. It's not clear why this season - led by the same bug - is so much more intense, some experts said.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is urging people to protect themselves against the virus.

At Carmel Christian in Matthews, more than 160 students were out with the flu one day in late January.

There have been 325 confirmed cases of influenza A, 391 cases of influenza B and six cases of people infected with both since September 1, 2017, the health unit said.

The death toll for the year is 305, making it North Carolina's deadliest flu season in at least 10 years.
