Betsy DeVos Made a Complete Fool of Herself on '60 Minutes'

Betsy DeVos Made a Complete Fool of Herself on '60 Minutes'

DeVos is also cherry-picking - as the Washington Post has noted, she has "been a force behind the spread of charter schools in MI, most of which have recorded student test scores in reading and math below the state average".

But when pressed about how that's worked out in her home state of Michigan, DeVos couldn't say public schools were doing any better - only that "pockets" had improved.

Asked whether Trump tuned in to "60 Minutes", Sanders said, "I'm not sure if he saw the whole thing or not".

Since 1993, MI has been home to the lowest test score gains in the nation, according to the National Assessment of Education Progress.

Later in the interview, in a question about the months-long Me Too movement against sexual harassment and assault carried out by men in positions of power, Stahl asked DeVos if she had ever previously encountered such behavior.

"I don't know - overall, I can't say overall that they have gotten better", DeVos replied.

"I hesitate to talk about all schools in general because schools are made up of individual students attending them". The result, as Lesley Stahl pointed out to DeVos, is that struggling public schools can fall even further behind as their funding is gutted by departing students.

"Wisconsin's classrooms have been ground zero under Scott Walker for implementing the disastrous policies of Betsy DeVos and the private-school political machine the last several decades and became a laboratory test for gutting public schools under Scott Walker's failed governorship", said Martha Laning, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.

"Students at charter schools in Detroit ate doing 2x better than their peers", she wrote.

And it didn't end there.

STAHL: The public schools here are doing worse than they did.

"Maybe you should", Stahl said. Maybe try to figure out what they're doing?

"Maybe I should", DeVos said.

"

"I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming."

".

Not only does DeVos admit that she has not put a priority on visiting underperfoming schools - why not?? - but also capitulates the point entirely to Stahl. But I think there are a lot of really powerful forces allied against change.

DeVos rarely gives interviews outside outlets like conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

DEVOS: Sometimes it does. The reforms are helping, but there's so much more to do.

STAHL: Are you in any way, do you think, suggesting that the number of false accusations are as high as the number of actual rapes or assaults?

"They want gun control", Stahl responded. I don't know. But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved.

This wasn't the first time DeVos faced criticism following an uneven performance at a public forum.

Title IX is a federal law protecting students and school employees from gender-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and assault.

According to HuffPost, she dedicated almost half of a speech in September 2017 to stories of those wrongly accused of sexual assault, despite numbers showing that the number of rape accusations that are false is so slim.
