Bishop stresses continued United States engagement in Asia as Tillerson exits

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump announced to sack Tillerson and nominate Mike Pompeo, director of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to replace him. In his first visit to Moscow previous year, he asked Russian President Vladimir Putin what he wanted from the U.S. -Russia relationship and on what areas the two countries could cooperate.

He was repeatedly forced to deny he had fallen out with Trump - vowing to remain in the post despite a sensational report that he once dubbed the president a "moron".

Then, last October, Trump announced that he would pull out of the agreement if Iran didn't commit to fully ending its nuclear program. Trump's change puts Pompeo, an ardent foe of the Iran nuclear deal, in charge of USA diplomacy as the president decides whether to withdraw the US from the agreement.

That Donald Trump and Rex Tillerson stayed together so long is remarkable, so different are they in their approach to foreign affairs.

Tillerson's departure adds to a period of intense turnover within Trump's administration that has alarmed those both in and out of the White House. But over time, Tillerson found himself frozen out and in disagreement with the man who mattered most, Trump.

"Expect Pompeo to play a protagonist's role in avoiding the entrapment of previous US administration engagements with North Korea by holding absolutely firm on the United States' desired end state -denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and an end to the North Korea ballistic missile program".

"I have gotten to know Mike very well over the past 14 months, and I am confident he is the right person for the job at this critical juncture", Trump said via a written statement distributed by the White House.

He said he suspects Freeland and her team will now be researching Pompeo's home state of Kansas, looking to find areas of commonality and cooperation - particularly on trade.

The ex-Secretary of State had also warned Nigeria and the rest of Africa against accessing financial help from China. After joining the Trump administration, Tillerson appeared to signal his interest in sticking with the Paris deal.

After firing Tillerson, Trump reportedly told the United Kingdom he supported the push to press Russian Federation for answers over the poisoning. Before that, Tillerson's State Department was preparing new sanctions with the Treasury Department to target some of the entities and individuals charged last month by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for meddling online against the 2016 election. "This underlines exactly how little Trump values expertise or diplomacy in general". He has said that Russia's election meddling poses a threat to the US and other countries and told Fox News last month that Russian Federation was already trying to interfere in the 2018 midterm elections.

"He will have an appreciation of Canada on the security side, and we will now do our efforts to remind him on the economic side", Robertson said during an interview with CBC News. "We do see it and you need to stop", Tillerson said in the Fox interview. Trump is also said to respect Pompeo's military background and West Point pedigree.
