BlackBerry suing Facebook, WhatsApp & Instagram

BlackBerry suing Facebook, WhatsApp & Instagram

BlackBerry's complaint claims the firm invented core aspects of modern messaging, such as notification icons, and when and how time stamps show up in a thread. It also accused the Canadian firm of living on money earned from such lawsuits now that it has lost its ability to offer innovative products and compete with others in the field.

Blackberry has filed a 117-page lawsuit against "relative latecomer" Facebook and its wholly-owned apps on Tuesday for copying BBM features and functionalities. BBM was the original messaging app that locked people into an ecosystem.

The stakes for BlackBerry are real. The company eventually stopped producing phones and sold the brand name to TCL, a China-based electronics maker.

And BlackBerry has requested the case be heard by a jury. "It's a very hard business", he said.

Blackberry has filed a lawsuit in a California district court to seek monetary damages against the use of their technology.

The company sued Nokia Corp in February 2017, alleging infringement of patents relating to 3G and 4G wireless communications technology.

Having won more than $800 million from Qualcomm previous year, and a confidential settlement with budget smartphone manufacturer Blu Products Inc, BlackBerry has a bigger target in its sights: Facebook.

"Facebook informs us insufficiently about gathering information about us, the kind of data it collects, what it does with that data and how long it stores it", said the court. The NTP suit ended in 2006 with BlackBerry paying $612.5 million.

BlackBerry requested the defendants be permanently enjoined from infringing the patents and from making, using, selling, and offering for sale its messaging applications.

BlackBerry on Tuesday made a decision to file a patent infringement lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg headed social media platform - Facebook and also the two associate applications - one the instant messaging app, WhatsApp and the other one is the photo sharing app - Instagram.

The lawsuit begins by summarizing and categorizing Blackberry as a "leading innovator in the field of mobile communications for the past 30 years, having invested substantial sums into research and development of communications technologies". "We intend to fight", said Facebook's general counsel Paul Grewal.

MobileSyrup has reached out BlackBerry for comment.

While BlackBerry's suit may appear to be completely random, it might actually be part of a bigger strategy. Blackberry underlined that it has an obligation to it investors to tap the necessary legal remedies. "The fact that they had to resort to litigation against a large company with a lot of resources is not a particularly bullish sign".

Facebook is, however, rubbishing the charges and have said they would be contesting all the charges levied against it. It's not just Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram which have been utilizing them.
