Canada is spared from Trump's tariff on steel & aluminium… for now

The president, who has repeatedly argued that the U.S.is "on the losing side of nearly all trade deals", signed proclamations to formally institute a 25 percent tax on all steel imports and 10 percent levy on all aluminum imports during an afternoon White House event.

Trump signed two proclamations that levied a 25 per cent tariff on steel and a 10 per cent tariff on aluminium imported from all countries except Canada and Mexico.

While the White House has repeatedly said the tariffs should come as no surprise, the news has riled many GOP lawmakers, USA trade partners, and even some inside Trump's White House.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday officially announced steep tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, The Hill reported. "Absolutely vital. Steel is steel".

But Trump also said that Cohn was a "nationalist" in his own way because "he loves our country". Our industries have been targeted for years and years. "That's going to stop", he said.

Arizona Sen Jeff Flake, a Republican, said he plans to introduce legislation next week to nullify the tariffs though he has acknowledged that finding the votes to stop the president's actions could be hard. "We want to build our ships, we want to build our planes, we want to build our military equipment with steel, with aluminium from our country. It's a travesty", he said. In a statement, a company spokesman said,"We anticipate these remedies will increase the demand for steel produced in the United States". "Exclusions will add reams to the tariff code that US businesses will struggle to navigate". By contrast, we will not place any new tax on product made in the US. Or do we actually have plenty of steel for that, and we're doing this to punish countries that we have a trade deficit with? "It is also bad for United States economically and with jobs", he rued. The administration argues that the USA steel industry's struggles could leave the country exposed if imports are cut off amid a geopolitical conflict.

"The American aluminium and steel industry has been ravaged by aggressive foreign trade practices".

"But I am of the opinion that it's good for America to create more jobs here and not be dependent on China", he said. He said tariffs on steel will likely trickle down to customers.

Congressional GOP leaders have signaled they want to narrow the administration's steel and aluminum tariffs before they are implemented, the same day President TrumpDonald John TrumpAccuser says Trump should be afraid of the truth Woman behind pro-Trump Facebook page denies being influenced by Russians Shulkin says he has White House approval to root out "subversion" at VA MORE pushed forward with the measures despite widespread GOP backlash. It's a move that could impact businesses in Berks County.

They haven't given up on the possibility that they can get the president to tweak these tariffs if the markets or other countries react badly. "We will be doing something with them". It's called reciprocal. It's a mirror of tags.

Hours before the press conference announcing the tariffs, Trump said: "We have a very close relationship with Australia. As of yet, we've heard from ministers that they're concerned about this, but no real plan in terms of what they're going to do".

The fact that the White House did agree to exempt Canada and Mexico from these tariffs - at least temporarily - is not all that comforting to Republicans. White House trade advisor said in a heated TV interview that exemptions would complicate the process.
