Fashion Icon, Hubert de Givenchy Dies At 91

The black sheath dress Givenchy created for the opening scenes of Breakfast at Tiffany's became known as the most famous "little black dress" of all time. "He will be greatly missed", the company announced.

Givenchy came to Paris from his hometown of Beauvais at age 17 to start his career.

The iconic fashion designer passed away in his Paris home on Saturday, March 10.

Before long, he had moved on to designing for several major fashion houses including Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong and Elsa Schiaparelli.

The French aristocrat founded his eponymous house in his mid-20s in 1952, and launched his ready-to-wear collection in 1954, coming into his own alongside fashion's most recognizable names, including Christian Dior and his mentor, Cristobal Balenciaga. He maintained low overhead costs to keep down the prices of his designs.

Thus began a decades-long friendship that saw Givenchy dress the star in almost a dozen films, including the 1961 hit "Breakfast at Tiffany's". "Little by little, our friendship grew and with it a confidence in each other", he added. "He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality", Hepburn once said of him. Givenchy also designed clothes for her in the 1957 film "Funny Face". One of his clients was United States first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

"It was an enormous help to know help to know that I looked the part".

He continued: "We did all the fittings in secret".

"She persuaded me and how wise I was to accept", Givenchy told AFP.

Even today, Givenchy remains a star-studded brand. Beyoncé's love of the fashion house's style is well-known, with her having worn its creations to the last five Met Galas she attended between 2012 and 2016 (she didn't attend the gala in 2017). He sold the Givenchy house to luxury conglomerate LVMH in 1988, staying on until he retired in 1995.

Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, said he is "deeply saddened" by Givenchy's death.

It was also the Givenchy look that former USA first lady Jacqueline Kennedy adopted for her White House years, sticking to a uniform of shift dresses, pillbox hats and low-heeled pumps.

French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy leaves an elegant legacy.

The silver-haired, blue-eyed Givenchy was a prodigious worker in his time, starting weekdays sketching or choosing fabrics at 7 a.m.in his studio on the Avenue George V in Paris. "I extend my most honest condolences to his family and to all those who have known him", he continued.

The French fashion legend's cause of death has not been released yet but the news was shared by his partner Philippe Venet, a former couture designer.

'True gentleman'

"Hubert de Givenchy was a symbol of Parisian elegance for more than half a century... who revolutionised fashion", his label said Monday.

Nina García, Elle magazine's editor-in-chief, posted: "RIP Hubert de Givenchy".
