Fitbit Launches Fitbit For Kids

Fitbit Launches Fitbit For Kids

Today, the company is expanding its line with the Versa, a more casual, affordable model.

Priced at $199.95, the Versa is best described as a sleeker, more refined version of Fitbit's first smartwatch, the Ionic. Like the Apple Watch, you'll be able to customize the clockface and choose from a variety of accessory bands, including leather, metal, and woven ones.

Users will be able to track various elements of their period, but Fitbit is not selling the service as a contraceptive or conception aid, making the effort somewhat pointless at present. It's worth noting that these will become available across all Fitbit devices, but with a custom experience for Versa and Ionic owners. I relived some elementary school gym class trauma with a session of dodgeball and Presidential Fitness Test-style strength training. The new Versa offers 24/7 heart rate tracking and offers onscreen workouts. Like the Ionic, it's platform agnostic. It also offers advanced features such as Global Positioning System tracking, onscreen workouts via the Fitbit Coach app, swim tracking with water resistance up to 50 meters, sleep stage tracking, on-device music including partnerships with Pandora and Deezer, and card-free payments (on the Special Edition) so you can run phone-free when you want. It's also safe for swimming.

The Ace will be available in Q2 at $129 also with pre-ordering available. The Versa looks more like something Pebble would have produced, drawing on many design features from the Pebble Time, in particular.

You've got the color options of grey or pink for the body of the actual watch. That will extend to reminders and social challenges later in the year.

That last bit is important, as these products represent a new push against the Apple Watch, which is closing in on Fitbit's market share.

Both watches are a similar size, but the Ionic is noticeably thicker; the Versa has a softer profile, with a back that's more rounded, whereas the Ionic is more angular.

The company also spoke a little more about the Fitbit Ionic: adidas edition. It'll also feature a custom adidas clock face and is expected to arrive March 19 for $329.95.

While Fitbit will also release the Fitbit Ace in the coming months - a tracker aimed towards kids - the company is truly relying on the Fitbit Versa to drive some significant sales and re establish the company as the go-to manufacturer for fitness trackers - especially in the high-end scene.

How much does the Fitbit Ace cost? The tracker will be available in two colours - "electric blue" and "power purple" - and will retail for $129.95 in Canada. Similarly, Ace will encourage kids towards getting nine to 12 hours of sleep each night, as opposed to eight hours like other Fitbit trackers do with their adult users. This will include parental view settings, so you can control who friends your children. You can pre-order it right now on the Fitbit site.

It's not a groundbreaking innovation, but giving you dynamic cycle predictions allows you to log your symptoms easily and mark when you're likely to be less active. According to a recent Fitbit survey, 80 percent of women did not know how many phases are in a menstrual cycle and more than 70 percent were unable to correctly identify the average length of a cycle, demonstrating a lack of awareness about women's health.

As mentioned, Fitbit wants the Versa to appeal to a wider audience, and part of that audience is female.

As this is a new smartwatch from Fitbit - a brand known for health and fitness wearables - you should probably only consider buying this if you're interested in fitness features.
