Frida Kahlo's family complain after artist is made into Barbie doll

The 'Inspiring Women' collection only has three dolls so far, but Mattel's Marissa Beck shares that they will grow the doll line with more dolls in the future.

But the latter has violated their contract by failing to inform Kahlo's relatives about the uses of her image, he told AFP.

The company also stated they obtained the rights from Kahlo's niece, Isolda Pinedo Kahlo. "The collaboration with Barbie was in that sense".

Kahlo's great-niece Mara de Anda Romeo said Mattel does not have the rights to use the artist's image.

But Kahlo's family soon issued a statement objecting to the doll. 'Cos TBH, the Kahlo doll looks very Barbie-ish and well pretty in that iconic Barbie way and if it wasn't for the hairstyle and distinct colours, people would be like 'who dis?'

"Mattel has worked in close partnership with the Frida Kahlo Corporation, the owner of all rights related to the name and identity of Frida Kahlo, on the creation of this doll", a Mattel spokesperson said.

And Bindi Irwin says she's 'honoured' to have been included in the exclusive 17-doll Barbie collection released this week.

Dressed in a billowing blue, red and black dress with a fringe shawl and floral headpiece, the Frida Kahlo Barbie sells for $29.99.

This is not the first time that the commercial activities of the Frida Kahlo Corporation are said to have angered some of Kahlo's descendants.

Other Barbies unveiled this week and modeled off modeled off contemporary female figures are one-of-a-kind and not available for purchase. Dolls include Amelia Earhart, Chloe Kim who stole hearts at this year's Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and boxing champion Nicola Adams OBE. A champion windsurfer, a chef and a journalist also joined the roster of new dolls.

I'm not saying that every Frida Kahlo toy needs to come with a metal pipe and a copy of the Communist Manifesto, but if we aren't going to get the mustache and full unibrow, then many we need to pick other Latina artists to celebrate.

Whether the actual Frida Kahlo would have found her muse in Barbie form will never be known.
