International Women's Day honored with marches, protests around world for women's rights

Authorities did not say how many participated in Spain's first-ever nationwide female strike held on International Women's Day, but the two largest unions said around 6 million women took part. In England, the Women's Strike Assembly UK called for women to wear red, while France's Libération newspaper was sold for €2.50 for men, but €2.00 for women. For 24 hours, women will not go to work or perform unpaid household labor. "We call for rebellion and a struggle against the alliance of the patriarchy and capitalism that wants us to be obedient, submissive and quiet".

Among the enthusiastic protesters was Noemi Sanchez, an engineer who works at a security company in Madrid and who chose to join the strike.

"We do not accept worse working conditions or being paid less than man for the same work", it stated.

In Spain, women earn an average of 23 percent less than men, according to 2015 data of the National Statistics Institute (INE). Women have also been pressuring the government to tackle the issue of domestic violence, Al Jazeera reported previous year.

The strike aims to highlight discrimination, harassment and violence against women in Spain, which the organisers see as a product of macho attitudes. Women on strike also set up road blocks in Spain.

The ruling Partido Popular (PP) and the Partido Socialista (PSOE) opposition both issued manifestos to coincide with the day.

In 1917, females in Russian Federation against the background of the war elected to strike and protest on the last Sunday in February for "Bread and Peace". Women all over the Balkans are protesting and attending rallies that focus on "re-traditionalisation, fascism, nationalism and patriarchy" according to BalkanInsight.

Several more protests were held in city squares in Madrid and Barcelona throughout the afternoon and hundreds of thousands of people took part in 300 rallies in more than 200 cities and villages across Spain. In Kenya, African women are meeting today to discuss ending violence against women and girls with disabilities. Asia Argento, who accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, marched with the students.

In Afghanistan, hundreds of women, who would have been afraid to leave their homes during Taliban rule, gathered in the capital, Kabul, to remind their leaders that plenty of work remains to be done to give Afghan woman a voice, ensure their education and protect them from increasing violence.
