Mikaela Shiffrin breaks another record with a win Saturday in slalom

Shiffrin finished third in the giant slalom in Ofterschwang, Germany, taking the champion's crystal globe after her closest competitor in the overall standings, Switzerland's Wendy Holdener, failed to win the event or finish second.

Since 2014, Shiffrin has raced in more than world championship and world cup slalom competitions and she recently competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang.

The world cup victory was Shiffrin's 11th of the season, tying her career high for a single season, and her 17th time on the podium this season.

"I was happy yesterday but I was still thinking how I could prepare best for the race today and what I needed to do to come out and be motivated and ski really fast again", said Shiffrin, who finished third in Friday's giant slalom on the same hill to secure the overall title before skipping the public bib draw in the evening. With a win in Saturday's World Cup slalom at Ofterschwang, Germany, the EagleVail racer became the first racer to reach 42 career victories on the World Cup before turning age 23.

Her nearest rival, Wendy Holdener of Switzerland, lost any hope of overhauling the USA star when she trailed in 14th on Friday.

The win also moved her into a tie for 10th place on the all-time World Cup list and fifth on the women's list.

"It was a pretty tight race, so it was not easy to go into the second run and think, 'Oh, yeah, I'm fine, ' and to just ski", Shiffrin said.

The season-ending World Cup finals will take place next week in Are, Sweden.

"It's still my goal to finish the season as strong as I can", Shiffrin said, adding she would "try to have some fire" in Are.

"For me the important thing is the balance between risk and being smart". "I know, that's going to be some headlines now".
