One student dead, another hurt in Alabama school shooting

A 17-year-old girl is dead and a 17-year-old boy is wounded after a shooting in one of the largest high schools in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Jefferson County Coroner confirms the identity of the 17-year-old girl killed in the Huffman School Shooting as Courtlin Lashawn Arrington of Birmingham.

"At this particular time, we consider it accidental until the investigation takes us elsewhere", Wilson said according to AL.com, an Alabama news website.

The shooting prompted a brief lockdown though students were subsequently released late Wednesday and authorities said they had subsequently determined that the shooting was not perpetrated by "someone from the outside" the school.

The Alabama school has working metal detectors and would be open on Thursday with heightened security and a crisis team on hand, Lisa Herring, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, told reporters. "Our hearts are heavy", Woodfin said. A second student was injured and is in critical but stable condition, while an adult employee was treated and released at the scene.

Wilson said the firearm used is in police possession.

Shots were heard around 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EST) inside the school and the facility was placed under temporary lockdown. The student then reportedly accidentally shot himself as he was putting the gun away. "This is a 17 year old who 30 days from now would be 18". He added, "We are asking questions from the staff, the students, anyone who was in that area".

Police said there was surveillance video they will be reviewing and possibly some witnesses, but as of Wednesday evening, details surrounding the shooting were scarce.

School official confirmed the shooting did not come from "someone from the outside came into the school", according to ABC.

Police said at least two shots were fired but are still trying to sort out a timeline of events and what led to the gunfire. Just last week, as police and school officials investigated a reported threat at Huffman Middle School, a gun was found outside an entrance door, believed to have been left there as students prepared to be scanned and have their backpacks checked.
