Protesters, White Nationalists Clash At Michigan State University

An alt-right supporter of Richard Spencer was arrested for pointing a gun at protesters ahead of the white nationalist's speech at Michigan State University.

The violence happened before the event where at least 150 protesters faced off with a small number of Spencer supporters. Law enforcement officials say over a dozen people were arrested for misdemeanor and felony offenses.

Hours before the speech, several hundred protesters - some wearing masks - marched toward the venue where the event was being held amid a heavy police presence.

"If it was during the school year, we would've had, like, probably a thousand people", Pillai said.

MSU ultimately denied Spencer's National Policy Institute space to speak on campus, citing safety concerns.

"What happened outside was really worrisome and heinous", Spencer said. I am for his ability to speak whatever he wants. The alt-right leader helped organized the "Unite the Right" white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., last summer where one counterprotestor was killed.

Spencer, an outspoken supporter of Trump during the 20-16 campaign, rose out of relative obscurity after widely circulated videos showed some Trump supporters giving Nazi-style salutes to him during a gathering in Washington to celebrate the Republican candidate's electoral win.

He said an aid of his was attacked and injured by counter-protesters. Others proudly displayed colorful protest signs. "We chased them away".

After a violent clashes erupted at a speaking event for white supremacist Richard Spencer at Michigan State University, police moved in to make arrests.

"The ideas that they espouse: genocide, white supremacy, fascism, are anti-American and risky to our people, to our nation, to Americans", he said.
