Scaife has 19, victor as Rutgers women top Purdue in Big Ten

The Scarlet Knights (14-18) won an opening-round game for the second straight season and will face sixth-seed IN on Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) - For the first time since joining the Big Ten, Rutgers looks as if it belongs.

IN was 19 for 53 from the field and had one field goal in the first 11 minutes of the second half.

While Indiana tied the game up on two seperate occasions in the second half, Rutgers never relinquished the lead and held on for a seven-point victory, becoming the first No. 14 seed in the tournament's history to advance to the quarterfinals.

He was a catalyst during the Scarlet Knights' first half run and he hit some daggers late to keep IN at distance and close out the contest.

Tyler Scaife led ninth-seeded Rutgers (20-12), which shot 32 percent, with 13 points.

Deshawn Freeman also caught fire for Rutgers as he went 7-of-12 for the field to score 15 points. Wagner fouled out with 4:37 left, having played only 15 minutes and scoring 11 points.

The Hoosiers, on the other hand, couldn't buy a bucket. IN made only six of those 24 attempts (25 percent).

The Hoosiers hung around and managed to stay in the game - tying it at 46 at one point - and shot well at the free-throw line (25 for 29). Guys like Josh Newkirk, Al Durham, and Colin Hartman have to make an impact.

His OT 3 put MI up 72-70, and the Wolverines made just enough free throws to hold off the Hawkeyes (14-19), who got a basket from Luka Garza on their first overtime possession and not another one.

So the season likely ends here on March 1 with a three-game losing streak and a 16-15 record.

Thanks to the Boilermakers' play over the course of the regular season, the team earned a No. 3-seed for the tournament and will play on Friday for the first time in the tournament. Sophomore Ae'Rianna Harris just missed a double-double, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, a block and two steals, while senior Andreona Keys chipped in nine points, five rebounds and three assists.

Tonight was a tough way to go out, but the seeds have been planted for a new era of IN basketball.

Indiana: The Hoosiers lost to just about every good team they played this season, but could still squeeze into the NIT.
