Sky suspends former Liverpool player Carragher for spitting

LONDON (AP) - Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was suspended as a soccer analyst by the Sky television network on Monday after being filmed spitting in the direction of a 14-year-old girl through his auto window.

In a video of the incident, the teenager's father repeatedly mentioned the scoreline in Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool. The girl then wound down her window before her father shouted "Unlucky Jamie lad".

In a live interview on Sky News on Monday afternoon, Carragher, who called the family on Sunday, said: "It was a moment of madness that is hard to explain".

Speaking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT radio, Jones said: "It is cowardly". For Christ's sake, he is supposed to be one of the top men. Driving away from Old Trafford the family of United supporters spotted Carragher in his auto next to them in traffic.

"Totally out of order and I've apologised personally to all the family this evening", Carragher said on Twitter. "I said, "Hey Jamie, good result, 2-1" and he sort of looked at me and I said, "2-1, ha ha" and his face just changed".

"I asked whether this was anything to with the fact that they hate each other's guts but Diouf said it was his moral compass that forced him to ring in". "I just want to apologise and I hope you are OK".

SH: Tell me about the family.

Carragher has since the spitting incident, apologised to the 14-year-old and phoned her to do that. I apologise for it.

"They're disappointed I've dragged their name through the mud. Especially the young 14-year-old daughter". I've done a bad thing and have to accept whatever comes my way.

It came as Danish channel TV3 Sport pulled the 40-year-old from their line up to cover the match between Manchester United and Sevilla tomorrow night.

Carragher has become a staple of Sky's coverage of the Premier League since his retirement in 2013.

Will he stay as a Sky pundit?
