Snapchat testing new features in a bid to outdo its competitors

This time it's Snapchat who appears to be copying Instagram with a new "tagging" feature. TechCrunch broke the news on Instagram building a similar Giphy integration in late January, which launched a week later.

Users need to take a photo or video, then type the person's username into the text field in Stories.

"As soon as we were made aware, we removed the GIF and have disabled Giphy until we can be sure that this won't happen again. while we wait for Giphy's team to take a look at it", TechCrunch quoted a Snapchat spokesperson as saying.

Snapchat is letting some users tag their friends.

If you're viewing a tagged Story, you just swipe up for a "more" option. This window will then flash details of the tagged user's profile information and an Add button for new contacts.

By adding the tag option to Stories, Snapchat seems to have been inspired by Instagram. Considering that Snapchat now shares analytics and insights with its network of influencers, its addition of "mentions" feels like another feature that will allow the platform to function as a serious tool for communicators. The widely-used messaging app, WhatsApp also lets you use GIFs without any hindrance. Although Facebook Messenger and Twitter also support GIFs on their platform, they utilize the Tenor database, which means that they are safe from this particular controversy, for now, at least.

It comes after Snapchat completely overhauled the app's design last November, by separating the app between "social" and "media" in an effort to make the app more personalized and easy to use.
